NSS announces the launch of our first new continuing education course for our Data Seekers as part of the ProTech program, Power BI. This follows the recent announcements of two ProTech courses for our Software Development Seekers.
When recently surveyed, NSS Data Analytics Seekers rated Power BI as one of the top skills they wanted to continue to build on from bootcamp. This sentiment from Seekers aligned well with what we heard from NSS alumni who are working as data analysts and related roles. These alumni stressed the importance of going deeper into working with multiple data sources, and building models and dashboards using realistic business scenarios. Power BI is widely used, and developing deeper experience with data modeling, dashboarding, automation, etc. will benefit Seekers no matter what platform they end up using.
Course Overview
This six week part-time course prepares learners to move beyond the basics with their Power BI skills. With a clear structure based on real-world workflows, students will learn how to transform raw data into clean models, build analytical dashboards, and deliver insights that drive action in the workplace. The class will meet two times a week in our online classroom with each session lasting approximately two hours. The course is instructor-led with real-time support and collaborative learning opportunities. Students should also expect to spend approximately two to three hours per week on coursework outside of class sessions. A Slack channel will be available for students to get support from each other, NSS alumni, and staff.
In this course, students will work through the three essential layers of the Power BI workflow—ETL, semantic modeling, and report design—while applying advanced techniques in Power Query, DAX, and data storytelling. Along the way, they’ll build a portfolio-ready report and gain experience with publishing, row-level security, and automation tools used by professionals.
By the end of the course, you’ll learn how to:
- Clean and normalize raw data from flat file into a star schema using Power Query
- Create multi-layered data models with fact and dimension tables (Galaxy Schemas)
- Use M Code and advanced Power Query transformations (Group By, Merge, Append)
- Master foundational DAX functions (CALCULATE, SUMMARIZE, FILTER, CROSSJOIN) and calculated tables
- Build slicers and dynamic visuals that bridge the gap between tech and business
- Apply Row-Level and Object-Level Security (RLS/OLS)
- Publish, share, and automate reports in Power BI Service
- Translate data into compelling business insights that impress stakeholders
Course Launch
This course is anticipated to launch late June 2025.
Cost
The initial cohorts of the Power BI course will be free to qualified students.
Who is qualified to apply?
For the first cohort, we are targeting NSS Data Analytics Seekers (graduates of our full-time and part-time Data Analytics Bootcamp who are still searching for their first tech role). After the first cohort, we will open the program to other qualified applicants, including tech professionals who have been laid off and looking to acquire new skills to help them restart their careers and recent graduates of other skills credentialing programs (e.g. certificate from another bootcamp, relevant college or university degrees, etc.).
How to Apply
Eligible NSS Seekers will receive an email soon with details on the class schedule for the first session, and how to enroll. Keep an eye on your inbox for this opportunity to enhance your skill set and boost your job search.
We will announce how those laid off from tech positions or those with relevant credentials still searching for a first position can connect with us to express interest in the program soon. For now, you can sign up for our ProTech mailing list below to be notified when this course (and others) open for applications.
