Before her journey into software development, Jaclyn French of Full-time Web Development Cohort 48 worked as a full-time music teacher, teaching all ages, guitar, voice, bass, ukulele, songwriting, and rock bands. “I had been entertaining the idea of entering the world of tech for years since I enjoy being in front of the computer, troubleshooting, and creating solutions to problems,” she recalls. Jaclyn shares in her podcast that a fellow coworker told her about Nashville Software School (NSS) and encouraged her to apply, citing that “musicians make great coders.”
What was your favorite capstone project and what about it made it your favorite?
“I really enjoyed my final capstone ‘Spooktober.’ In this project I was able to design a halloween/fall movie database that a user can search through, and save to their calendar. I also got to implement Google Authentication which made signing in a breeze! I really got to learn how to use Django to handle data, and I found it is so nice to use compared to the front-end where we just had JSON data. This project was also the first time I worked with a calendar and all I can say is that it's very difficult, but I got it to work with my teammates' help!”
What advice would you give to current or incoming NSS Web Development students?
“I would say ‘you can do it!’ It's not the easiest topic, it's actually very complex, but the instructors and your teammates will help you understand what is happening. I truly believe that anyone who is patient with themselves can code.”
What was your favorite part of your NSS experience?
“Getting to know my instructors and classmates”
What roadblocks did you encounter along the way?
“I was working part time in the evenings and it was a stretch for me physically and emotionally. But I made it!”
