What happens when an engineering team introduces generative AI to their daily workflow? If the underlying code is built on solid engineering patterns, productivity soars—but if it's weighed down by technical debt, AI simply accelerates the mess.
On this episode of Stories from the Hackery, NSS founder and CEO John Wark sits down with NSS graduate, former instructor, and Developer Advocate Sydney Noh. Together, they discuss the real-world impact of AI adoption, how engineering culture shapes team output, and growing a career in software development.
Before finding her place in technology, Sydney spent over five years working as a television producer on shows like Fixer Upper. After a few years as a producer in Nashville, she began looking for her next career step and enrolled in Cohort 33 of the Full-time Full-stack Software Development Bootcamp at NSS.
Sydney started her job search early and secured a full-stack engineering role before graduation. Driven by a passion for mentoring, she later returned to NSS as a part-time evening instructor, guiding five consecutive cohorts through their own learning journeys. Her natural talent for improving developer experience and communication eventually led her into Internal Developer Advocacy—first at Built and later at FortyAU.

During her time at FortyAU, Sydney built and delivered a three-level internal AI training curriculum. The program helped over 50 engineers build integrated workflows using Anthropic’s Claude toolset.
Through regular team check-ins, Sydney observed a clear pattern in how different development groups adapted to the tools. Since generative AI acts as an amplifier, when an engineering team had a clear architecture, consistent testing patterns, updated documentation, and fast local setups, they integrated AI workflows with ease. But when an application carried unaddressed technical debt, AI simply amplified those existing system issues faster.
