# Career Shift: Healthcare Product Analyst to Data Analyst | Stories From The Hackery

When Asia Mayes was working as a product analyst in healthcare, spreadsheets and data points were part of her daily routine. While she already had basic familiarity with Excel, she knew she wanted a firmer technical grasp on how to organize and automate data. Hearing about Nashville Software School (NSS) during her initial workplace onboarding planted the seed. As a working professional, she enrolled in our part-time Data Analytics Bootcamp (Cohort 17) to expand her technical capabilities without putting her job on pause.

### Balancing Full-Time Work with Hands-On Learning

Managing a six-month, part-time program while working full-time requires clear communication and discipline. Asia started by having an open conversation with her manager about taking on evening and weekend coursework. Backed by a supportive team, she balanced her workweek with class sessions and dedicated her free time outside the office to studying.

For Asia, the live, instructor-led format was key to staying on track.

> I think you have to ask yourself what is the best way that you learn. Is it just self-study? Is it a live environment? Or is it just a pre-recorded lesson... For me, when I looked into NSS, I really liked the hands-on 'cause that's how I learn the best. Having an instructor guide you through the program, through coding, was very helpful for me."

### Bringing Classroom Tools Directly to the Workplace

Asia's role as a product analyst created plenty of opportunities to apply her coursework into her day-to-day work. Moving into advanced Excel functions gave her the confidence to share new techniques with her colleagues. As the curriculum progressed into SQL, Python, and Jupyter Notebooks, Asia used coding techniques to speed up data transfers between software platforms. A process that used to take a full day was cut down to four or five hours. Later, when collaborating with pharmacy teams to integrate records for over 200 medications, her SQL training allowed her to write queries that organized and moved data cleanly.

### Stepping into Training and Looking Ahead to Informatics

Halfway through the bootcamp, Asia transitioned into a role as a software trainer, guiding doctors, nurses, and hospital staff through operational software workflows. Having technical data foundations gave her a clearer view of the systems behind those workflows.

That experience also crystallized her long-term career ambition: becoming a clinical informatics specialist. Asia hopes to combine her operational healthcare background with her technical skills to build IT solutions that save clinical teams valuable time. Her experience at NSS also sparked a drive for continuous learning; just one month after finishing the bootcamp, she enrolled in a master's degree program to keep building her knowledge.

### Advice for Prospective Students

For working adults considering data analytics, Asia suggests focusing on how you learn best and taking the leap without letting self-doubt hold you back.

> If you're on the fence, I say go for it because it can open up more opportunity. It can expand your resume, expand your knowledge... Don't freak out if you're gonna get accepted or not. Talk to the instructors, talk to your administration, see what they can do to help you get through, and then focus on the details of the coursework and finish strong."
