In this episode of Stories from the Hackery, Nashville Software School (NSS) founder and CEO John Wark sits down with two-time NSS graduate Mark Bond to explore his pathway into tech.
Finding the Rhythm in Code
When Mark Bond came off the road as a touring musician and became a stay-at-home dad, he would open his laptop during nap time to tinker with electronic instruments and basic software. That curiosity turned into a drive to build something real.
Mark realized that writing music and writing software share a fundamental core: both are logical puzzles. Arranging songs trains your brain to stay persistent through frustration, iterating step-by-step until you reach a finished product.
When Mark reached the limit of what he could teach himself, he turned to NSS to guide him through the landscape. He completed the Software Engineering bootcamp, but graduating into a slower tech market meant facing a tough reality. Rather than sending out hundreds of cold resumes, Mark doubled down on continuous learning.
Embracing the Mindset of "Learning How to Learn"
Transitioning into tech requires accepting that you will never know everything on day one. As Mark navigated the learning curve, he leaned on one of the foundational goals of NSS: learning how to be comfortable being uncomfortable.
To keep his skills sharp, Mark embraced every learning opportunity available. He enrolled in free continuing education classes through ProTech, served as a teaching assistant, and built up his technical stamina. That continuous momentum led him directly into NSS's Data Engineering bootcamp.

Turning a Capstone into a Real-World Proposal
When it came time for Mark to build his final Data Engineering capstone, he didn't just pick a random topic. He researched a prospective employer—Donor Bureau—and built a data pipeline using real Federal Election Commission (FEC) data specifically tailored to solve their business challenges.
By focusing on how he could bring value to their team rather than just completing a school requirement, Mark made an immediate impression. He secured a job as a Junior Data Engineer before his final presentation. Once hired, his capstone project transitioned directly into his onboarding work and formed the basis for a new platform proposal for his employer.
