Investing In Yourself | Graduate Spotlight

Chelsea Harris-Washington was working at Asurion as a Tech Support Coach when an opportunity arose for her to upskill through Asurion’s Software Engineering Apprenticeship with Nashville Software School (NSS). Chelsea jumped at the opportunity! “There was already a cohort of software engineering apprentices, and just seeing the looks on their faces being engineers, I wanted that for myself,” Chelsea shares in her demo day podcast. 

Why did you choose to attend NSS?

“I chose NSS by way of Asurion's software engineering apprenticeship program. I was selected as one of the 9 internal candidates selected to transition from a more customer care role to a software engineering role.”

What was your favorite part of your NSS experience?

“I really enjoyed my peer-to-peer learning. I loved getting to know my team. They were all so inspiring, and encouraging, and we all came from so many walks of life so it was nice to experience this time with them, and enjoy such a unique learning experience.”

What was your favorite capstone project and what about it made it your favorite?

“My cookbook was such a fun app to make. This was a time I was able to deepen my knowledge of JavaScript, and React. This app was my favorite to make because I went down the rabbit hole of React hooks and was able to successfully create a custom React Hook.”

​​What advice would you give to current or incoming NSS Students? 

“I would encourage you to be patient with yourself, you made the right choice by making this type of investment in yourself.”
