Musicians Who Code - 10 Years | 2,000 Journeys

Written by Jessica Grande | Jul 21, 2022

At NSS, we get students from all walks of life that attend bootcamps to begin their journeys toward a rewarding career path to tech. Since we’re based in Nashville, Tennessee, also known as Music City USA,  it’s not uncommon for a couple of students in each cohort to be a musician. In this episode of 10 Years | 2000 Journeys, we speak with Rob Kirkpatrick of Full-time Data Analytics Cohort 3 and BJ Golden of Full-time Web Development Cohort 47. Two NSS alumni who were professional musicians and discovered the parallels between their music career and their new career in tech!

Rob Kirkpatrick, Full-time Data Analytics Cohort 3 Alum

Before applying to the Data Analytics program at Nashville Software School (NSS), Rob Kirkpatrick was a dueling pianist. Data began to spark his interest when he wo

cleaning data or entertaining crowds as a musician, Rob understands the importances of knowing what matters to each audience. “Data analytics lets me take my skills and do interesting, valuable work,” he shares.  Rob now works as an Application Development Analyst at Accenture in Nashville, TN.

BJ Golden, Full-time Web Development Cohort 47 Alum

Since graduating from the Full-time Web Development Bootcamp at NSS, BJ Golden has continued to tour as a professional musician while maintaining his web development job with HealthStream on the road. “Music and web development are similar in many ways, primarily by means of creativity, problem solving, and communication,” he says. “My ability and passion for creating music in the abstract have both made for a seamless transition into the world of software development.”
