“My favorite part of NSS was the people. My classmates were an absolute joy to work with and the instructors were very helpful and patient in guiding us through new tools and techniques. The career development team also did a great job of keeping our soft skills up to date with regular meetup events throughout the course. From these events, I was glad to network with professionals already in the field and learn from their experiences as well.”
“My capstone is titled ‘Agricultural Aid From Abroad’ and it is about the H-2A visa program and domestic crop yields from 2010-2020. I chose this topic because I've always had an interest in immigration-related matters, having gone through the immigration system myself through a lot of googling. I wanted to tell the story of the largest group of temporary workers in the US as a tribute to their work. Since a lot of their work involves harvesting crops, I decided to compare the H-2A data against crop yields to see what patterns emerged. Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be a correlation overall but it was interesting to see the differences in the data visualized on Tableau.”
“Do your best. Don't compare yourself to others. There will be times of challenge and frustration but remember that everyone learns differently. NSS has a great support system and tons of resources to help you along the way, so don't be afraid to reach out for help. A lot of people want to see you succeed and are willing to help you achieve your goals (including me)!”
