Discovering Greener Pastures with Web Development | Graduate Spotlight

Written by Jessica Grande | Mar 7, 2022

Prior to his time with Full-time Web Development Cohort 51 at Nashville Software School (NSS), Joshua Stewart was working in occupational therapy and home-health when he decided it was a time for a new career path due to his hours being cut during the pandemic.

“I ended up just looking for greener pastures, so to speak,” he laughs. “I have a background in media and worked with computers a lot when I did editing, so I figured I could look into [software development],” he shares in his podcast.

Having seen first hand the impact NSS had on his friends' lives that attended the program, Joshua had the confidence to pursue it as a career for himself and the rest, as they say, is history!

What was your favorite capstone project and what about it made it your favorite?

“My favorite project was my front-end capstone called Stitch Saver. I found it to be the most useful for me personally. It definitely has a very specific audience it solves problems for, but I think it solves those problems well.”

What roadblocks did you encounter along the way?

“My biggest roadblocks were definitely self-doubt and assuming that I should know the answers without asking instructors for clarification or assistance.”

What advice would you give to current or incoming NSS Web Development students?

“I would say to try to not compare yourself to others and to ask questions, regardless of if it embarrasses you or not. Chances are pretty good that the question you are asking is on other people's minds as well.”

HIRE JOSHUA

Now that Josua has graduated, he is excited to find his first job in tech where he can apply his knowledge and grow his skills.

I hope to meet and make meaningful working connections with other developers and expand my skill base along the way!
