Enhanced Analytics Skills | Graduate Spotlight

Written by Jessica Grande | Mar 2, 2022

Michael Ferral of Part-time Data Analytics Cohort 5 has held various positions in food service leadership and is currently an administrator in food services at a private, higher education institution. In this role, he analyzes data and a variety of trends to inform the ways that this information can be used to improve performance. Michael uses these analytical tools along with his strong interpersonal skills to understand nuances and to identify areas for growth and development.

Why did you choose to attend NSS?

“The awesome reputation for being able to immediately apply the skills learned.”

What was the topic of your capstone and how did you choose it?

“My capstone was an automated Cost per Meal and Menu Management Dashboard. I wanted to do something that had real world application in a business setting. When learning all of the technologies in NSS I was always thinking about a way to apply them to real world business applications. I wanted to use the skills learned in data analysis to help with feedback and communication as well as automate business processes.” Watch Michae’s demo of his capstone project here

What roadblocks did you encounter along the way?

“Sometimes it got hard and I had to ask for help on simple things! The best way to make it through was to really talk it out with the instructional staff.”

What advice would you give to current or incoming NSS Data Analytics students?

“Commit to doing NSS [work] every day, especially if you're doing the part-time schedule.”
