Finding Purpose Through Programming | Graduate Spotlight

After working in automotive manufacturing, Nick Carver of Web Development Cohort 46 decided it was time for a change. “I found a lot of satisfaction in programming with simple flow-chart logic through a STEM program in high school. I was, however, on a course that would take me into mechanical process and design engineering,” he explains. After a few years doing field work and finding himself on a computer connected to a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), sensor, or a robot controller, Nick found that what he truly enjoyed doing was programming. “I saved [up money] and applied to Nashville Software School and have not regretted it a single moment,” he smiles. “I hope to share my enthusiasm for the world of technology with whoever is interested and, in turn, build great applications for people who need them.”

I have a better understanding of my purpose today.

What was your favorite capstone project and why?

“The full-stack capstone project provided a sense of completeness to NSS. At the end, we were given the tools and knowledge to have full control over what our website could do and was able to leverage as much as we could in three weeks' time. We were given the freedom to show off the skills we were most proud of.”

What advice would you give to current or incoming NSS Web Development students?

“Do not be afraid to speak up! Helping classmates was one of the most fulfilling parts of my time at NSS. I know from speaking to instructors that providing someone else understanding is the best part of their job. It is a win-win situation for knowledge and the bonus is the relationships you build.”

What was your favorite part of your NSS experience?

“NSS was a structured learning environment I had never experienced before. Having one class to focus on, lots of content to consume, and classmates for accountability showed me how great education could be. I have graduated from bootcamp with people who are driven and that I know I can trust. That is the best part of NSS.”
