Analyzing Social and Emotional Skills with Data | Graduate Spotlight

Written by Jessica Grande | Jun 14, 2021

Driven by her curiosity for understanding the "whats," the "hows," and the "whys" of human behavior on an individual and societal basis, Tobias Hollander aspires to make advancements in overall wellbeing through discovering insights in data and creating meaningful reports.

“My prior experience building relationships and observing developmental milestones as a preschool teacher have centered my goals around understanding human processes on a fundamental level,” she explains. “I aim to aid in the quantifiable progression needed to gauge the momentum towards a more benevolent and healing future for all.”

What was your favorite part of your NSS experience?

“All the support given by the course instructors, department director, career development team, and practically everyone at NSS!”

How did you choose the topic for your capstone project?

“As a former Preschool Teacher, part of my ongoing education was to gain more credentials in Early Childhood Education which led me to focus on a key developmental milestone: Social and Emotional Skills. Learning this subject matter and how to utilize tools for teaching my class was the catalyst for my new found interest and hobby in emotional intelligence and human behavior. Over a person’s life, new experiences shape social and emotional skills like a ripple effect in water. Thus, my curiosity in how Twitter users express themselves on the social media platform.”

What roadblocks did you encounter along the way?

“My mindset. Some days I wouldn't give myself enough credit for how much I've previously learned when faced with a new challenge. Cheer for yourself every step of the course!”

What advice would you give to current or incoming NSS Data students?

“Always speak up when you need help and collaborate with your [classmates].”
